We require any leader in AHOP, in the prayer room, or at a With One Voice event to assent to the
fundamental truths of the Christian faith, as expressed in the Apostle's Creed:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
the Creator of heaven and earth,
and in Jesus Christ,
His only Son, our Lord:
Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
The third day He arose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of
God the Father Almighty,
whence He shall come to judge the
living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy *catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and life everlasting.
Amen.
*The word "catholic" refers not to the
Roman Catholic Church, but to the universal
church of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The AHOP leadership holds other theological truths as valuable and useful,
some are listed below. These naturally shape With One Voice. At the same time, we
recognize that not everyone who participates in With One Voice will adhere
to exactly this list, or express them in exactly the same way. We will not allow
theological argument to be an excuse for not pursuing God wholeheartedly,
or not loving our neighbor as ourselves. Before you argue with us, we ask for the
opportunity to gaze together on God's beauty ... then maybe we can talk!
- The Bible as God's Word -- in His mercy God empowered human beings to write down
true things about Himself and about human history. What a gift! We want our cold
hearts warmed and enflamed by the bonfire of God's word.
- Ability to Encounter God -- God desires relationship with human beings, and anyone
who seeks will find Him. Encounters with God provide the highest pleasure available to
the human heart -- as Jesus said, "This is eternal life, to know God, and Jesus Christ
whom He has sent" (John 17). They cannot be programmed formulaically, they are graces from God.
Any revelation of who God is imparted by encountering Him will develop truths found
in His word and bear witness with recorded encounters throughout the history of His people.
- Humility and Transparency -- When we aren't loving each other, God graciously
withdraws Himself to make us uncomfortable with the state of our life. Tender-hearted humility
and openness to correction from trusted friends are invaluable aids to getting back on the
right track.
- Local Churches -- The Bible does not command 24/7 prayer, but does command the
fellowship of followers of Jesus in local churches, which offer the kind of sacramental
life described in Acts 2:42. We respect and honor local churches in Austin and want to see
them grow and thrive.
- Revival -- We are not satisfied with the spiritual condition of ourselves, our
churches, our cities. We look at remarkable movements of God such as the Great Awakening and
ask Him -- Why not here? Why not now?
- Evangelism & Missions -- Taking the good news of God's love in Jesus to our neighbors
and to the ends of the earth is not an optional activity for the church. We believe that putting the
first commandment (to love God) in first place will fuel the second commandment (to love people)
without burnout.
- The Imminent Return of Jesus -- It's hard to be bored when you are watching and waiting
for the King of the Ages to come and take His place on the earth. How much more in this generation, when
the evangelization of all nations is within our grasp? When tension in the middle east is ever heightened?
When there is an awakening cry from the Bride of Christ, "Come Lord Jesus"?
